Malegitti Shivalaya Fort and Temple Badami

Temple Description

The Badami Shivalaya temples, dating from the 6th to 8th centuries CE, are notable examples of early Chalukyan architecture and Dravida Hindu design. Located in Badami, Bagalkot district, Karnataka, India, these temples are situated near the Badami cave temples and Agasthya lake, but are positioned on different hillocks. They consist of three main temples: the Upper Shivalaya (which is actually a Vaishnava temple), the Lower Shivalaya, and the Mallegitti Shivalaya, which is the best-preserved and situated to the north of Badami town. These temples feature artwork related to Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi, and also illustrate stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
