Vitthala Temple Hampi

Temple Description

The Vittala Temple, constructed in the 15th century, was commissioned during the reign of King Devaraya II (1422 – 1446 A.D.) of the Vijayanagara Empire. Significant expansions and enhancements were made during the rule of Krishnadevaraya (1509 – 1529 A.D.), the most renowned ruler of the Vijayanagara dynasty, who helped shape the temple’s current grandeur.

Also known as Shri Vijaya Vitthala Temple, this sacred site is dedicated to Lord Vitthala, a form of Lord Vishnu. According to legend, the temple was intended as a grand residence for Lord Vishnu in his Vitthala form. However, the deity found the temple too opulent and chose to return to a simpler abode.

Considered the most magnificent of Hampi’s temples and monuments, the Vittala Temple showcases the exceptional creativity and architectural skill of the Vijayanagara artisans. Built in the Dravidian architectural style, it features the elaborate and artistic carvings typical of South Indian temple design, making it unparalleled in Hampi.

Originally, the main shrine had an enclosed Mantapa, which was later expanded with an open Mantapa in 1554 A.D. The temple complex is extensive, surrounded by high walls and three towering gateways. It includes various halls, shrines, and pavilions, all crafted from stone and each exhibiting its own unique beauty.

Notable structures within the complex include the Devi Shrine (shrine of the Goddess), Maha Mantapa (main hall or Sabha Mantapa), Ranga Mantapa, Kalyana Mantapa (marriage hall), Utsava Mantapa (festival hall), and the renowned Stone Chariot.
