The Kadiyali Mahishamardini Temple in Udupi is among the oldest temples in the South Kanara district, with a history spanning over 1,200 years. According to the renowned archaeologist, Late Dr. P. Gururaja Bhatt, this temple is as ancient as the Sri Ananteshwara Temple of Udupi, which dates back to the 7th century. Consequently, it predates the Lord Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi. Dr. Bhatt’s assessment was based on the stylistic features of the Vigraha (statue) of Kadiyali Mahishamardini, which he noted closely resembles the Chalukyan style of Badami.
