Temple Description

It is said that the Sri Subrahmanya Temple dates back more than eight centuries. The temple is located across from Sri Adhi Vinayaka Temple at the Halasuru metro station and next to the well-known Halasuru Someshwara Temple. This temple is supposed to be older than Sri Someshwara Temple. Here, the god is also referred to as Ananda Murugan. One of the Arupadaiveedus of Murugan, Lord Subrahmanya, is a replica of Murugan in the Thiruthani Murugan Temple. In this temple, Lord Subrahmanya is flanked by distinct shrines representing Valli on His right and Devasena on His left.

According to legend, one of the Mysore Maharajas constructed this temple many years ago. The Maharaja of Mysore at the time was traveling to see his uncle, who had an eye condition. He saw that in the current location of the temple, there were devotees who frequently visited an Anthill. When the Maharaja went to the anthill, he prayed that his uncle would recover from his eye condition so that he might erect a temple there for the Lord. The Maharaja was informed that his uncle had recovered from the eye condition when he arrived in Mysore. The temple was built as a votive sacrifice in thanksgiving to the Lord.
