One of the temples that has been growing in popularity recently is Athma Lingeshwara Temple. This is about 15 kilometers from the Bangalore-Mysore route and 85 miles from Bangalore in the Mandya district.
The name Athma Lingeshwara evokes memories of King Ravana from the Ramayana, who, in order to grant his mother’s wish, obtained Lord Shiva’s blessings and built Lord Shiva’s Athma Linga (albeit this location is actually near Gokarna).
It appears that this was formerly a hill that was later formed into a temple. This temple’s gopuram is located at a considerable elevation, and access requires climbing a short flight of stairs.
