Temple Description
Hindus believe that Nandi, which means “joy” in Sanskrit, is the sacred bull. Despite the Nandi statue’s apparent dark tint, it wasn’t actually that way when it was constructed. The idol’s original color was grey. However, over time, the statue became blacker due to the constant application of oil and charcoal by believers.
A myth states that Lord Shiva put the iron plate on the bull’s head to prevent the statue from growing. According to an inscription in the temple, the spring beneath the Nandi statue is the source of the Vrishabhavathi River, which flows through Bengaluru’s western region.
