Temple Description

The Lakshmi Devi Temple, located in Doddagaddavalli village within Hassan District, Karnataka, India, is an early 12th-century Hindu temple complex. The primary temple features four shrines arranged around a central mandapa (hall), with each shrine facing one of the cardinal directions. The eastern shrine is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the northern one to Kali-Durga, the western one to Shiva, and the southern shrine is either empty or dedicated to Vishnu. The complex also includes a separate Bhairava shrine situated to the northeast and four small shrines positioned at the corners of a nearly square prakara (enclosure). All nine temples are distinguished by their pyramidal Nagara-style shikharas, which reflect influences from Maharashtra and suggest a vibrant exchange of architectural ideas between northern and southern India. Additionally, there are several smaller shrines within the complex.
