Omkareshwara Temple

Temple Description

The Omkareshwara Temple, an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in Madikeri, Coorg, Karnataka. Notably, the temple’s architecture features a unique blend of Gothic and Islamic styles, making it a distinctive religious site in the region. It attracts numerous devotees and tourists alike.

The temple was commissioned in the 18th century by King Lingarajendra II. According to legend, the king constructed the temple to atone for the sin of having killed a Brahmin in pursuit of his political goals. The act caused him to suffer from troubling nightmares. In search of relief, the king consulted wise sages who advised him to build a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Following their guidance, he erected the temple and installed a Shivalingam, which was brought from Kashi, a sacred city. The completion of this temple is said to have ended the king’s nightmares. Today, this Shivalingam is worshipped as Omkareshwara and continues to be a focal point for visitors to Madikeri.
