Shravanabelagola is a town situated near Channarayapatna in the Hassan district of Karnataka, approximately 144 km (89 miles) from Bengaluru. It is renowned for the Gommateshwara Bahubali statue, a major pilgrimage site in Jainism, which saw significant architectural and sculptural development under the Western Ganga dynasty of Talakad. The hill of Chandragiri, also in Shravanabelagola, is notable as the place where Chandragupta Maurya is believed to have died in 298 BCE after embracing Jain monasticism and a life of asceticism.
The Gommateshwara statue, Akkana Basadi, Chandragupta Basadi, Chamundaraya Basadi, Parshvanath Basadi, and the inscriptions of Shravanabelagola are recognized as Adarsh Smarak Monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India.
