Shri Sadashiva Rudra Temple Surya

Temple Description

The Surya Sadashiva Temple, situated in Nada village of Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, is about 12 km from Belthangady taluk center and 4 km from Ujire town. This temple stands out due to its unique tradition of clay offerings, which symbolize human earthly desires. Devotees visit the temple, preferably on Mondays, bringing a coconut and a kilogram of rice along with their clay offerings. After the priest examines the idol, the offerings are accepted on behalf of the deity. These offerings are placed in a circular pile near the temple and include clay models of various objects like children, cradles, limbs, houses, automobiles, cattle, and more.

History According to Mr. Laurie Honko, a renowned folklore expert from Finland, the temple is estimated to be around 1,200 years old based on his analysis and folk literature.
Popularity Previously a lesser-known site, the temple gained attention following a news report by a local channel that highlighted its religious significance. Unlike many temples that require costly offerings, this temple allows devotees to fulfill their wishes through simple clay models. Devotees offer clay replicas of what they wish for, such as a cradle for a child, once their desires are realized.

Thousands of tiny clay idols and structures can be seen near the temple, believed to be placed where Lord Sadashiva Rudra first appeared and blessed his followers. These include models of multi-story buildings, cows and calves, cradles, couples, cars, currency notes, and even modern gadgets, reflecting the diverse wishes of the devotees.
