According to legend, the deity Masani Amman was initially known as “Masani” or “Smashani.” In old Tamil, “Masani” translates to “mango,” while “Smashani” is a Sanskrit term meaning “graveyard.” The story tells of a woman who was condemned to death for eating a mango from a cruel king’s orchard. In her honor, the villagers constructed a shrine, ultimately deifying her.
