Perched atop the hill is the renowned Melkote Narasimha temple, dedicated to Lord Yoga Narasimha. Tradition holds that Prahlada himself installed the idol of Yoga Narasimha at this site. Krishnaraja Wodeyar III later honored the deity with a gold crown.
Legend has it that this location was where Prahlada performed his penance. After his father, the demon Hiranyakashipu, was slain by Nrsimha, Prahlada was advised by his elders to undertake penance to avoid any “Pitra-dosha” (ancestral curse). Thus, this is the sacred place where Prahlada worshipped Nrsimha in the form of Shaligram.
